Your Front-Row Seat to the Greater Bay Area (GBA)

International MBA candidates have historically faced a trade-off: study in a Western business hub and hear about China from the outside, or study on the mainland and step away from your global network. Hong Kong is the only place in the world where that trade-off doesn't exist and HKUST sits at the centre of it.

Within a 1-hour commute by fast rail and cross-border links, Shenzhen — the Silicon Valley of the East — Shanghai, and the wider region are on your doorstep, and you're one flight from anywhere else that matters. Your classmates include mainland operators, regional founders and investors, and international peers who came here for exactly that combination.

“This is the bridge HKUST MBA is built around: real China access, without losing your deep China access, while being in the flow of international trade. With AI reshaping tech competition and supply chains rewiring around Asia, that bridge matters more right now than at any point in business history.”

Most business schools treat China as a special subject, a separate elective on "Doing Business in China". At HKUST, China runs through the entire program, because the people teaching it have been in it. The Value Investing faculty invest in Chinese markets. The Digital Strategy faculty have led tech businesses on the mainland.

Our China-focused electives — Doing Tech in Asia and China, Chinese Tech Companies' Strategy in Global Markets under AI Era, and Economic Development in Asia: A Practitioner's Perspective — sit alongside the rest of the curriculum, not on top of it.

Learn It Here. Apply It There.

Last month, HKUST MBA students spent a Saturday in Shenzhen, not on a brochure tour, but in working sessions with founders and operators across hardware, fintech, and AI. International students from finance, marketing, operations, technology, and manufacturing sat alongside mainland classmates who brought their own networks into the room. The conversations weren't about understanding China. They were about acting on it.

“That's the difference between studying China from the outside and operating inside it.”

The connection runs through the whole program: Many of our part-time MBA students live and work across Shenzhen, Beijing, and Shanghai, and bring those networks into the classroom with full-time students. Study trips take students into mainland companies. The Full-Time MBA embeds China through coursework, study trips, and the alumni network you graduate into — anchored by HKUST's incubator in Shenzhen and our Shanghai centre.
