Sharing from Helen Yang, DiMBA Intake 2021 student

Remember our first batch of DiMBA student, Dr. Helen Yang? She is a medical doctor as well as the Strategic Director of Distinct Healthcare. Apart from the role of a doctor, she is also responsible for the business planning, pricing and data analysis of the medical group.

1. How is your learning experience of Digital MBA ,do you see any difference from your expectation?

The inherent nature of doctors' work in round-the-clock patient-caring entails irregular and long work hours. The DiMBA does not only provide me with the maximum flexibility to balance between work and study, but also equips me with the latest business knowledge to excel in my new role as the Group Strategic Director.

My learning experience in the DiMBA Program has totally exceeded my expectations. Our course materials are structured on a dedicated learning platform in multiple short sessions. Through the platform, I can easily make use of my fragmented time to complete and absorb a learning point in just 10-30 minutes uninterrupted. Personally, I find this learning model extremely efficient and fulfilling.

Riding on the concepts we learnt through the platform, professors would then guide and lead us to go through a highly interactive discussion in the weekend live classes. Me and my peers would take the opportunities to share our own thought processes and experiences, which is critical for me to really learn and apply the knowledge points to my practical work.

Moreover, our professor purposefully put us in multicultural groups which helps to break the cultural boundaries of the students and I find the overall experience useful and memorable for a lifetime.

2. What is your favorite course so far?

I find IT Management by Professor Jeevan Jaisingh the most impressive so far. I still remember that in the first class, the first thing that I was told was “IT Management is not about IT, it is about Management”. After completing the course, I fully understand and agree to this.

Throughout the learning process, we immersed deeply in a sea of eye-opening case studies. With the guidance of professor, as a team we overcame countless challenges, in which we have developed in-depth critical thinking skills.

Python Deep Learning was another surprise. It was a truly challenging subject, but I thanked myself for not giving up. Based on the students’ background and learning progress, the professor was able to make instant adjustments which restored my confidence in moving on. Even up till today, I could still remember vividly all the knowledge points and apply it to my work.

3. What is your thought over Face-to-face learning to virtual learning?

To be frank, I don’t think Face-to-face learning and virtual learning are comparable to each other. They are different in nature and have their own set of unique advantages and disadvantages. What’s more important is to truly understand and embrace the nature of the virtual world to achieve higher and bigger.

Outside of the classroom, we have a group created on a social media platform where we can exchange ideas, remind each other of important class matters and the learning vibe formed between us all is indeed amazing.

4. Can you share your advice and tips for our next DiMBA students?

The curriculum of Digital MBA is of high quality. At the same time, professors would also have high expectations on students’ commitment and professionalism. If you are thirsting for knowledge and aspire to elevate yourself, I highly recommend DiMBA to you all.

I feel that DiMBA is more efficient than face-to-face courses. I can schedule my time more autonomously to work and study without having to make extra time for travel. In conclusion, I believe that digital is the path that must be taken in the future, and I am grateful to have chosen HKUST as my partner on this path.
